Tough at the TopJuly 2, 2018
Knaresborough's low handicappers have enjoyed a few tough days competition recently and come out with heads held very high. First up, a scratch team comprising Ian Backhouse, Carl Peirson and Matt Fowler were asked to defend KGC's position in the Yorkshire Union third division (Members will recall that only a few years ago we were in the sixth division). The way it works is that each year the divisional championships are held at venues around Yorkshire. Eighteen teams feature in each division, of which the bottom six will be relegated a division, the top six will be promoted and the middle six stay put. This time around, KGC's team stayed solidly in the middle bracket, so retain the position in division three. This is a major achievement for the Club and I'm sure we'd all like to express our thanks for their tremendous grit and determination to get through 36 holes in such gruelling conditions.
Sunday July 1st saw KGC hosting and fielding two teams in this year's Harrogate Union first division championship. It was a challenge for players from all 22 teams entered, the good news being that KGC's "B" team of Matt Fowler, Alex McGuinness, Tom Birtwhistle and Steve Whitwham took a superb second place, only three shots behind Rudding Park. The "A" team, comprising Dean Sleight, Mike Pennington, Steve Bradley and Ian Backhouse came in a creditable eighth, 11 shots behind the young guns (and Steve), proving it's not always age before beauty.
And at the time of writing, many of the above are looking out at another boiling hot day and contemplating a first team match at home vs Pannal this evening! Phew!
