Investing in the Future

Knaresborough Golf Club has a well established Junior section and caters for all levels, from the youngster wanting to try golf for the very first time to the more established junior golfer keen to play competitive golf. Our aim is to ensure that Juniors enjoy their golf in a safe and fun environment.

Our Juniors meet regularly for practice and playing, mainly on Sunday afternoons, with a medal and Stableford competition each month and additional trophy competitions which are presented at the Club Annual Presentation Night. The Juniors schedule is organised by our Junior Coordinator, Julie Hargreaves. Contact the section for more information [email protected]

Our Junior Team competes in the Harrogate & District Union of Golf Clubs League and several of our juniors are selected for County training.

A friendly introduction

For those who are new to golf, come along and try a group session on a Saturday only £6pp – pre bookable in the Pro Shop on 01423 864865.

These are delivered by our Club Head Professional Gareth Murray and are offered in two age categories:

Age 5 – 9 years: at 11am to 12pm

Age 10 – 15 years: at 12.30 – 1pm

Additional bespoke lessons can be arranged directly with Gareth.

In the summer months we also run family fun sessions, again on Saturday afternoons.

Development Structure

Club Professional Gareth Murray operates the Junior Golf ‘Passport’ scheme which offers a golf ‘development structure’. This allows children of all ages to try golf and then hopefully progress through the stages of both skills and personal development to become an active junior golfer.

Junior Golf ‘Passport’ includes progressive skills-testing across all major playing disciplines, where coach and student will work together, as the young golfers improve week-on-week, through the passport’s pages. Coach and junior golfer can ‘stamp’ the passport as each new technique is learned. This fun innovation helps enhance coaching opportunity for the PGA pro while building confidence for the student, maintaining and increasing interest.

The Junior Golf ‘Passport’ comes with a smart wallet, while the coach can print out award certificates and specific coaching tips that can be inserted into the passport’s pages.

Following feedback from coaches and families, the passport offers key new sections for the young player who is now growing up in a world of technology: this includes a guide to the terminology around how a golf club works (driver and iron); different types of ball flight (from hook to slice); how to record yardage for shot-making, and more.

A further area focuses on developing ‘Skills for Life’, including an understanding of sportsmanship, while the ‘Milestones’ section is used to record a series of ‘firsts’ e.g. first golf lesson, first par, first birdie, first handicap; and also favourite hole, favourite golfer and so on as their appreciation of the sport grows.

Junior Membership Categories

We identify two categories as Junior: under 16 and 16-18 years old.
